EMDR ... Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing

EMDR stands for ‘Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing’. It was invented by Francine Shapiro in 1987. It is now extensively used throughout the World for treatment of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It is thought to work by activating both the right and left sides of the brain while recalling traumatic events. This allows the memory to be reprocessed and the emotion attached to it is released.

EMDR seems simple, however it is a form of psychotherapy and can cause repressed issues to surface, so it is strongly recommended that it is only used with a trained therapist. Although the process is controversial, as it is not understood how it works, there is no doubt that it has a high degree of success, under clinical condition, in treating patients with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
